KNOWLEDGE LEVELS OF BREASTFEEDING AND THE EFFECT OF BREASTFEEDING SELF-SUFFICIENCY ON MOTHERS WHO HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED OR CONTACTED WITH COVID-19

Abstract

International organizations recommend maintaining breastfeeding with breast milk when they are diagnosed with COVID-19 or if they are in contact, following the necessary hygiene rules, by wearing a mask or if they are too sick to breastfeed. This study was conducted to determine the effect of COVID-19-diagnosed or contacted mothers on breastfeeding knowledge levels and breastfeeding self-sufficiency during the pandemic. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was included to the mothers who had a close contact story or who were diagnosed with COVID-19 in Kahramanmaraş province between April and May 2021. The mothers were applied by online survey, introductory information form, a survey form that measures their information about breastfeeding, and a breast-feeding self-sufficiency form. The study involved 78 mothers diagnosed or contacted with COVID-19 among the nursing mothers registered in Kahramanmaraş city center and 47 mothers who agreed to take part in the study were included in this study. Mothers’ average scores for breastfeeding were 9.48±1.23 while the average scores for Breastfeeding Self-Sufficiency was 51.74±10.47. The score point average of Breastfeeding Self-Sufficiency indicated a statistically significant differences between the average mothers’ age, educational level and the status of feeding their babies for the mothers after diagnosed or contacted with COVID-19 (p<0.05). The mothers included in our study changed the way they feed their babies after they were diagnosed or contacted during the pandemic. It has been detected that breast feeding knowledge levels during the pandemic do not affect breast-feeding self-sufficiency.

COVID-19 TANISI ALMIŞ VEYA TEMASLI ANNELERİN EMZİRME İLE İLGİLİ BİLGİ DÜZEYLERİ VE EMZİRME ÖZ YETERLİLİĞİNE ETKİSİ

Abstract

Uluslararası gibi kuruluşlar COVID-19 tanısı almış ya da temas varlığında, gerekli hijyen kurallarına uyarak, maske takarak emzirmeye devam edilmesini ya da anne emziremeyecek kadar hasta ise sağım yaparak anne sütü ile bebeğini beslemesini önermektedir. Bu çalışma COVID-19 tanısı almış veya temaslı annelerin pandemi döneminde emzirme ile ilgili bilgi düzeyleri ve emzirme öz-yeterliliği üzerine etkisini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel olarak planlanan bu çalışmanın örneklemi; Nisan-Mayıs 2021 tarihleri arasında Kahramanmaraş il sınırları içerisinde daha önce COVID-19 tanısı almış anneler ile yakın temas öyküsü olan annelerden oluşmaktadır. Annelere online ortamda hazırlanan tanıtıcı bilgi formu, emzirme hakkında bilgi durumlarını ölçen anket formu ve emzirme öz-yeterlilik formu uygulanmıştır. Çalışmanın evrenini Kahramanmaraş il merkezine kayıtlı emziren annelerden COVID-19 tanısı alan ya da temaslı öyküsü bulunan 78 anne oluşturmuş ve çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 47 anne çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Annelerin emzirmeye ilişkin bilgi puan ortalamalarının 9.48±1.23, Emzirme Öz-Yeterlilik ölçek puan ortalamalarının 51.74±10.47 olduğu görülmüştür. Emzirme Öz Yeterlilik ölçek puan ortalaması ile annelerin yaş, eğitim düzeyi ve COVID-19 tanısı aldıktan sonra veya temaslı olduktan sonra bebeklerini besleme durumları arasında istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı fark vardır (p<0.05). Annelerin pandemi sürecinde tanı aldıktan veya temaslı olduktan sonra bebeklerini besleme şeklinin değiştiği, pandemi sürecindeki emzirme bilgi düzeylerinin emzirme öz-yeterliliklerini etkilemediği saptanmıştır.
