A Phenomenological Inquıry Into The Professional Identity Of Successful School Principals: Voıces From The Field

Year 2020, Volume: 2 Issue: 1, 12 - 39, 23.06.2020

Abstract

There have been an increase in the scientific investigations on
successful school principalship since 1980s, when effective school became the
focus of educational systems along with school accountability. The previous
research has revealed that school principal is one of the crucial factors
preceded by qualified instruction. In this sense, the purpose of this study is
to devle into the characteristics, professional identity and leadership
behaviors of successful school principals according to teachers, deputies,
students, and parents’ opinions. The phenomenological research design from the
qualitative studies was adopted in this research. Teachers, deputies, students,
and parents from successful schools in Amasya, Corum, Samsun and Tokat
provinces in Turkey were recruited through criterion and maximum variation
sampling methods. The data which were collected via a semi-structured interview
form was analyzed through content analysis technique. The findings show that
successful school principals mostly display paternalist, instructional, moral,
visionary, social justice, and culturally responsive school leadership
behaviors. Further, successful school principals have effective communication
skills, and are understanding, fair, and situational leaders.  Several recommendations for future research
have also been added.

Başarılı Okul Müdürü Kimliği Üzerine Fenomenolojik Bir Analiz: Alandan Sesler

Year 2020, Volume: 2 Issue: 1, 12 - 39, 23.06.2020
