Purpose: This study was carried out to investigate the effect of problem-solving education given to heart failure patients hospitalized in a cardiology unit on their problem-solving skills, quality of life and depression level.
Materials and Methods: This randomized controlled experimental study was carried out with a total of 53 patients: 27 patients in the experimental group and 26 patients in the control group. A written informed consent was obtained from the patients with ethics committee approval. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the MacNew Heart Disease Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Social Problem Solving Inventory-Revised Short Form (SPSI-R:S). The PSE group was given four sessions of individual problem-solving education in two sessions per week for two weeks.
Results: It was determined that, after the education, there was a statistically significant decrease in the mean BDI scores of the PSE group and a statistically significant increase in the mean scores of the SPSI and MacNew Heart Disease Health Related Life Survey Questionnaire but there were not any changes in the control group .
Conclusion: It was determined that problem-solving education positively affected problem-solving skills, quality of life, and depressive symptoms in the patients with heart failure.
