Evaluation of the Areas of Use of Social Studies Teaching in Early Childhood Education

Abstract

The early childhood period covers the first six years of an individual's life from birth and is a period of rapid development in every aspect. Social studies course is taught as a course at different levels of education in our country in relation to many sciences, and is also used in different learning areas in early childhood education. The aim of this study is to evaluate the areas of use of social studies teaching in early childhood education by preschool teacher candidates. This study is important in terms of providing preschool teacher candidates' evaluations regarding the use of social studies learning areas in early childhood. The research was conducted using a qualitative case study design. The study group consisted of 12 teacher candidates studying in the "preschool education department of the faculty of education" of a state university in the 2022-2023 academic year. An easily accessible sampling method was used as the basis for the selection of the study group. A semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers was used as the data collection tool. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. According to the results of the research, teacher candidates associated social studies as a sum of many disciplines, especially with fields such as citizenship, history, and geography. It was observed that preschool teacher candidates did not know much about social studies learning areas but had accurate information about their scope. In addition, it was concluded that social studies were frequently used in early childhood, and social studies could be taught through gamification and drama during this period.
