Trends of Studies on Elimination of Misconceptions in Mathematics Education: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the trends of the studies conducted in Turkey between 2013-2023 to eliminate misconceptions in mathematics education. One doctoral thesis, 27 master's theses and 27 articles accessed from Google Scholar and YÖK Thesis Databases were analysed within the framework of certain categories. The research was conducted with qualitative method using document analysis technique and the data obtained were evaluated by content analysis. According to the results, the most studies were conducted in 2019 and most of the theses were conducted at Balıkesir and Bartın Universities. The studies mostly focused on the learning areas of ‘Numbers and Operations’ in primary education and ‘Numbers and Algebra’ in secondary education. The studies were generally conducted at the secondary school level with samples of 1-50 students. In the studies where achievement tests and interview techniques were frequently used, alternative methods such as concept cartoons were found to be effective. It is thought that the results of this research will contribute to the researchers who will work in this field and offer suggestions.
