A Review of Graduate Theses on Organizational Communication in Educational Organizations

Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the trends of the studies in terms of communication within educational institutions in Türkiye. Using a descriptive content analysis approach, 16 theses, published in Turkish and English between 2003 and 2023, were selected from the National Thesis Centre database of the Council of Higher Education in Türkiye (YÖKTEZ). This study examined key variables including concepts, publication year, thesis type, educational level, research methodology, sample group, sampling techniques, and data analysis methods. Findings reveal that organizational communication is most frequently studied in relation to participation in decision-making behaviour and school management. Additionally, it is linked to a wide range of psychological and organizational factors, including motivation, commitment, burnout, emotional management, and identification. The analysis identified the most significant similarities across the following variables: thesis type (master’s theses), research method (quantitative correlational survey), sample group (teachers only), sampling method (simple random sampling), and data analysis methods (t-tests, ANOVA, and regression analysis). It has been determined that organizational communication in higher education remains a relatively underexplored area. Practitioners should enhance communication within educational organizations by organizing more seminars, providing in-service training, and incorporating content that strengthens administrators’ communication competencies, and researchers should prioritize doctoral dissertations, adopt qualitative and mixed-method approaches, and focus on organizational communication in higher education.
