Analysis of Educational Research on Cognitive Flexibility in Türkiye

Abstract

Cognitive flexibility is defined as the ability of individuals to develop cognitive strategies in response to new and unexpected situations. This ability is effective in students’ problem-solving, decision-making, and creative thinking skills, enabling them to adapt successfully to their educational and teaching lives in difficult situations. Therefore, examining cognitive flexibility skills in learning and teaching processes is of great importance. This study aimed to examine the current state of studies on cognitive flexibility in the field of education in Türkiye as well as changes and trends over time. A qualitative research process was followed and document analysis was conducted. In this context, 252 studies, 24 of which were doctoral theses, 129 master’s theses and 99 articles, were analysed in accordance with the criteria determined by using the Prisma statement. The data obtained were analysed descriptively according to publication types, publication years, research methods, sub-disciplines, study groups, and data collection tools. According to the general results of the study, the number of studies on cognitive flexibility in the field of education in Türkiye is increasing, and the sub-disciplines in which the studies are conducted are beginning to diversify. A significant increase has been observed in doctoral studies in recent years. Researchers predominantly prefer quantitative research methods and data collection tools such as forms and scales. Based on the research findings, it is considered necessary to increase experimental and qualitative studies aimed at developing cognitive flexibility skills, to encourage multidisciplinary approaches, and to raise awareness through studies conducted with all stakeholders in education.
